Gettysburg: The Address
Speaker: Gary Augustine, historian
On November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln mounted a horse to ride out to a plot of land south of town to make a few remarks dedicating a recently constructed cemetery where many of the Union soldiers who had died in the battle were interred. These remarks inscribed on the Lincoln memorial, recited and in many cases memorized by school children, are well known to most Americans. Yet how, when, and where Lincoln wrote these few words are the subject of dispute by historians. Join the speaker as he attempts to untangle these mysteries in telling the story of the Gettysburg Address.
